UNDER THE SKIN

DELPHINE DELOGET & CECILE ALLEGRA | DIRECTORS (FRANCE)

Why does the Mediterranean have so many ghosts? Why is Europe unable to or not taking notice of those who are wounded? Something is happening on the other side of the Mediterranean - something dreadful, unknown, extremely difficult to unveil. East Africa, an enchanting and mythical land, source of the Nile, has now turned into a giant trap.

Since 2008, thousands of young Africans have been kidnapped and sold to Bedouin traffickers. They end up in Egypt's northeast Sinai desert.

They are confined to detention camps, chained to one another, crammed up to seventy to a room. Release requires the impossibly high sum of $30.000. Daily - sometimes several times a day - they are tortured, electrocuted, burned. They are raped or forced to rape one another, facing immediate execution if they don't comply. While being tortured, they are coerced into calling their relatives, (and) through tears and shouts they beg for the ransom. This ghastly situation can last for months. One has to pay or die. It is estimated that more than 12.000 hostages have perished in the Sinai desert.
