Thenublk presents 'Our Stories: Black Women in Film' - 19.03.15
Hosted as part of UAL’s ACS Film & Literature Festival, Thenublk will be celebrating Women’s History Month by screening a series of short films created by a number of exciting storytellers whose work offers a refreshing look at Black experiences from around the globe.
A Q&A with the filmmakers* will take place after the screening.
Strolling (exclusive screening) - Cecile Emeke
'Strolling' is an online film series which explores and connects the nuances of the black experience. Each episode documents a stroll with people in various cities and countries around the world, having refreshingly raw and honest conversations about various issues at the forefront of their society. Strolling touches on everything from feminism, sexuality, gender, race and politics to philosophy, art, history, capitalism, war and poverty, and everything else you can think of.
Femme - Sarah Diouf
'Femme' tells the universal story of the Rebirth of a Woman who loved and hurt. Shot in Dakar, Senegal, Diouf believes the power and impact of the message lie in the combination of both poetry and photography, as well in the crossing of cultures, which - appear and sound - as one to symbolize the unique voice of womanhood. It speaks from, speaks for and is dedicated to the heart of the African woman - heavy and bleeding from past pains and sufferings, but always beating stronger as she becomes.
Sarah Diouf is the founder of award-winning magazine Ghubar. A digital fashion and lifestyle publication standing for acceptance of the world as it is.
I Know - Waiki Harnais
I know is a drama about a young woman whose fate is about to take an unexpected turn.
Waiki Harnais is a writer, screenwriter, indie film producer from London, and assistant to Ola & Olan / Cardy Films. Her films are the result of collaborations with upcoming directors, inspired by life experiences, mostly with a social or psychological backdrop. In 2013, her film Unveiling Maeva (dir. by Olan Collardy) was selected for several festivals including the Shuffle festival which was curated by renown English director Danny Boyle. Her work, alongside the films she regularly produces for Cardy Films, continues to circulate extensively online and at festivals worldwide.
Love on a Sunday Afternoon - Jamila Glass
'Love on a Sunday Afternoon' shares a day in the life of a young couple who experience the power and beauty of love between each other and among friends.
Raised in Houston, Texas, Jamila Glass attended the multi-Grammy award-winning High School for the Performing and Visual Arts as a vocal music major. She went on to acquire her BA in Film and Video Production from the University of Southern California’s School of Cinema-Television with a minor in Advertising. She is the owner of The Cutting Room where she produces and directs films and does freelance film and video editing. Additionally, she is the lead editor for the popular and award-winning Black and Sexy TV, an online television network with over 100,000 subscribers and a development deal with HBO. Aside from film and television, she has been dancing professionally with the Los Angeles Contemporary Dance Company for the past ten years.
