The EthioTrail At Abijatta Shalla National Park Ethiopia - 17.08.14

The Ethiotrail will be the first Trail Running race organized in Ethiopia in the area of the Rift Valley lakes ( Abijatta – Shalla National Park ) that would have 3 different race distances, two of 12km and 21km which you can make walking or running, and a 42 kms Marathon´s 1,200 meters uphill .

It will be the first time for Ethiopian and European runners to compete in African land.

Great Ethiopian Run is organizing this event in partnership with RIA Ethiopia Tour and Travel and Run in Africa Sport Travel, a Spain based sport travel agency, and in collaboration with Ethiopian Wildlife Conservation Authority and Ethiopian Athletics Federation. 

Abijatta-Shalla National Park is situated in the Great Rift Valley, 200 kilometers (124 miles) south of Addis Ababa. It is a park which includes two of the main Rift Valley lakes after which it is named and it covers 887 square kilometers in size, 482 of these are covered with the two lakes. Shalla, lies in the southern part of the lake and it is 266m deep crater and its surface is broken by small volcanically formed islands with large number of Pelican and Flamingo population and beautiful hot springs that bubble up and flow into the lake. In contrast Abijatta is a large brackish pan, nowhere more than 14m deep.

The altitude of the park ranges from 1540 to 2075 meters, the highest peak being mount Fike, situated between the two lakes on the north-eastern corner of Lake Shalla.

The average temperatures can be high, reaching 45 degrees Celsius at maximum and 5 degrees Celsius at minimum. In August the average temperature ranges from 23-27 degrees Celsius.
