Film Screening: ‘As it Grows’ by Verona and Dalian Adofo. Watch the trailer here

'As It Grows' is a UK documentary film exploring how it feels to be a woman of African descent who wears her hair naturally. The idea to make the film was borne from the mistreatment the US actress, Viola Davis, received at the 2012 Academy Awards for turning up in her natural hair.

It is an exchange of the experiences of 4 UK women and their hair journeys, the societal pressures and challenges they have overcome, and the positives experienced as a result, debunking many unfounded myths surrounding the topic.

5.00pm – 6.30pm

Film Screening: ‘Nas: Time Is Illmatic’ by One9 and Erik Parker

'Nas: Time Is Illmatic' is a feature length documentary film that delves deep into the making of Nas’ 1994 debut album, Illmatic, and the social conditions that influenced its creation.

Twenty years after the release of Nas's groundbreaking debut album 'Illmatic,' NAS: TIME IS ILLMATIC takes us into the heart of his creative process. Returning to his childhood home in Queensbridge, Nas shares stories of his upbringing, his influences — from the music of his jazz musician father Olu Dara to the burgeoning hip-hop scene in New York City — and the obstacles he faced before his major label signing at age 19. Featuring interviews with his 'Illmatic' producers (Large Professor, Pete Rock, Q-Tip, L.E.S., and DJ Premier) and musical peers (including Pharrell Williams and Alicia Keys), NAS: TIME IS ILLMATIC is a thrilling account of Nas's evolution from a young street poet to a visionary MC.

7.00pm - 8.45pm

Film Screening: ‘Concerning Violence’ by Göran Hugo Olsson

Narrated by Ms Lauryn Hill, 'Concerning Violence' (2014) is both an archive-driven documentary covering the most daring moments in the struggle for liberation in the so called Third World, as well as an exploration into the mechanisms of decolonization through text from Frantz Fanon’s The Wretched of the Earth. Fanon’s landmark book, written over 50 years ago, is still a major tool for understanding and illuminating the neo-colonialism happening today, as well as the violence and reactions against it.

Children activities on financial literacy will take place throughout the day dependent on the number of young people.

The event will be held at Platanos College, Clapham Road, London, SW9 0AL

The nearest tube station is Stockwell which is on the Victoria and Northern line.
