Refugee Week: Celebrating Sanctuary London -15.06.14

Counterpoints Arts presents Celebrating Sanctuary London (CSL) on the South Bank, Bernie Spain Gardens (next to Oxo Tower Wharf), London SE1 9PH to launch Refugee Week 2014.

The annual jamboree of arts by, about and with refugees and migrants from the across England, the UK and beyond. In association with Platforma arts & refugees network, featuring live music from established bands and new collaborations, plus spoken word performances, information stalls, food and much, much more!

Musicians include:

Katy Carr with Haymanot Tesfa
A new collaboration commissioned for Celebrating Sanctuary London where the singers will unpick personal stories, influences and cultural backgrounds. Katy Carr is a Polish-British singer, musician and songwriter whose most recent album is the critically-acclaimed Paszport. Haymanot is as a soulful singer of Ethiopian/jazz fusion, working with bands including Mook and Newanderthal.

Afrikan Boy
Fusing together his passion for grime, rap and afrobeat with a love for a good hook, Afrikan Boy’s tracks include One Day I Went to Lidl and his collaborators include MIA. His new album The ABCD will be released later in 2014.

Rafiki Jazz
Presenting their second full album ‘At Kriol Junction’ Rafiki Jazz go onstage live & direct through 2014-15 with their ‘unmissably intimate & vibey grooves, dancing across world language, genre & culture frontiers’

Jewan Mohammed with a special guest
Collaborating with a very special guest from the UK mainstream music (name to be announced shortly), ewan is a Kurdish musician from Syria based in Newcastle Upon Tyne.

Spoken word artists include:

Kayo Chingonyi
Recently awarded the Geoffrey Dearmer Prize and shortlisted for the inaugural Brunel University African Poetry Prize.

Avaes Mohammad
Avaes joined the Manchester based Asian Underground movement Nashini in 2002 and developed his own voice with influences stretching from the Sufi-Saints of South Asia to the Dub-Poets of Jamaica.

Dance and theatre artists:

Zlata Camdzic
Presenting her project Welcome to Dreamland which deals with the issues of living either as a stateless person or as an asylum seeker in the UK.

Ishimwa Muhimanyi
A graduate of Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance, his performance will draw on his memories of the most difficult time in his native Rwanda.
