The 12th London African Music Festival presents Sona Jobarteh (Gambia). Sona Jobarteh is the first female Kora virtuoso from the prestigious West African Jobarteh Griot family.

She is the granddaughter of the master Griot Amadu Bansang Jobarteh and cousin to the celebrated Kora maestro Toumani Diabaté. Sona studied at the Royal College of Music and worked with the likes of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Britten Sinfonia, Toumani Diabaté, Damon Albarn and Oumou Sangaré, to name just a few. She also composed music for the multi-award winning film “Motherland: The Score.

Tonight Sona Jobarteh plays her biggest solo concert to date supported by her hand-picked 7-piece band as she features music from her new album “FASIYA” (West African Guild Records). Sona will be captivating the audiences with her beautiful warm silky voice, strong West African rhythms and infectious melodies.

Opening the show is the young Londoner Bumi Thomas who fuses the rhythms of her Yoruba origin with the pop sound of her London town.
