Kpanlogo: Rhythms and Rhymes - Ghanaian Dance Course - 16-20.06.14

Posted: Apr, 6th 2015

Kpanlogo is the ‘twist and turn dance’ from the Ga people of Ghana, which is performed by youth to demonstrate their youthful exuberance. It is performed at all occasions across Ghana to bring people together and is popular due to its musical style, dance movements and its involvement of the audience.  This week-long course will introduce the Kpanlogo dance, and the songs, storytelling and drumming associated with it.

Kpanlogo is a traditional genre of music, which later developed into Ghanaian Highlife music. Kwame Nkrumah used Kpanlogo youth groups in his campaigns to gain support from the masses and it was performed on the day the Gold Coast gained independence in 1957. Kpanlogo is associated with the famous Ghanaian folktale character Kwaku Ananse, the clever spider that uses his wits to achieve seemingly impossible tasks and to get out of difficult situations.

This is a fun dance to learn and the basic movements are easy to pick up. Kpanlogo can also be further developed by more advanced dancers, introducing some of the less well known traditional movements from the Ga people. Open to everyone! With Nii Kwartey Owoo.

From Monday to Friday 19:00-21:00 pm.
