Ethio Beauty - Julie Mehretu: Mind the Map Exhibition - Until 21.09.14

Julie Mehretu: Mind the Map Exhibition - Until 21.09.14

Posted: Apr, 7th 2015 Contributor: Bilen Shifferaw,

Works by Mona Hatoum and Julie Mehretu feature in ‘Mind the Map’, a new exhibition at Punkt Ø’s Galleri F15 to mark the 200 year anniversary of Norway’s constitution. On display are a collection of archival maps, contemporaneous with the signing of the Moss Convention, which formed the basis of the union between Sweden and Norway. These historical maps will be complemented by a presentation of contemporary artworks, all of which use cartography and maps, in a variety of political, symbolic and highly visual manifestations.

Among contemporary works featured is Mona Hatoum’s Balançoires, (2010). The sculpture comprises two panels of glass, sandblasted with street-maps of Beirut, suspended opposite one another, suggesting two brittle children’s swings. Hatoum, born into a Palestinian family in Lebanon, is well known for recreating everyday objects as poetic, politically loaded and often sinister installation works.

Also exhibited are Julie Mehretu’s WWW (Pictures of Junk) (2008). These three digital chromogenic prints show Mehretu’s characteristic, frenetic mark making. The Ethiopian-American artist’s practice involves using architecture and the city as points of departure in creating large-scale, dynamic, layered works suggesting abstracted geographies.

Works by Bouchra Khalili, Jyce Kozloff, Miler Lagos, Kevin Simón Mancera, Fabio Morais, Vik Muniz, Rosana Ricalde and Susan Stockwell will also be on display, as well as examples of historical maps.
