Hailu Mergia At Field Day - 06.06.15
The return of Hailu Mergia is one of the most unlikely musical comebacks of the last few years. A major star of the 70s Ethiopian music scene as the head of the country’s leading instrumental ensemble ‘Walias Band’, Hailu jammed with luminaries such as Duke Ellington and Manu Dibango and undertook the first ever US tour by an Ethiopian band.
The acclaimed blog turned record label Awesome Tapes From Africa tracked down Hailu in order to reissue his 1985 record ‘Hailu Mergia & His Classical Instrument’ which lead to Hailu playing live again and with the trio including Tony Buck, Mike Majkowski and Hailu himself, this is destined to be one of the highlights of the weekend.
