The Craft of Ethiopian Manuscripts

Posted: Aug, 19th 2018 Contributor: Bilen Shifferaw,

Hosted by The Anglo Ethiopian Society. The Craft of Ethiopian Manuscripts with Sean Winslow

Ethiopia's scribes have been making manuscripts since Late Antiquity, and the practice is still alive, though rarer, today. Dr Sean Winslow (Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz) will introduce the Ethiopian scribal tradition, its history and current practice, illustrated with photographs and video from his fieldwork, interviewing scribes and others involved in book production and trade.

A number of contemporary Ethiopian manuscripts, along with tools used in making the books, will be on display and available for inspection.
