Scarification and Body Modification - 06.07.15

Posted: Jul, 2nd 2015 Contributor: Bilen Shifferaw,

This summer's CIAD Exchange looks at tribal marks, scarification and body modification; what they mean in their respective communties, and what value they possess in terms of a cultural beauty standard. We discuss the differences between notions of beauty as expressed through scarification and body modification and the westernised standard of beauty.

The exchange is a two hour event consisting of a one hour lecture and Q&A followed by a one hour networking and drinks reception.

CIAD - Costume Institute of the African Diaspora

The Costume Institute of the African Diaspora (CIAD) is an organisation established to research the history, culture and socio-political aspects of clothing and adornment from the African Diaspora. CIAD aims to highlight hidden histories within the field of clothing, fashion and adornment from global communities with African heritage, revealing cross cultural influences and engagements.
