Kazum Presents Ethiopia Calling - 10.07.15
Connecting with Channel 4’s ground-breaking new series The Tribe (Thursdays, 9pm), explore the vibrant and dynamic culture of Ethiopia through music, dance, film and talk. African’s second largest country in terms of population and now one of its fastest growing economies is a country with a proud history going back to the time of the Queen of Sheba, said by some to have been born there. The only African country not colonised, modern Ethiopia is home to 88 individual languages and is becoming a dynamic and positive example of cultural diversity with a range of different lifestyles – from modern city to traditional African village life.
Documentary producer Paddy Wivell and his team including cameraman Josh Allott and local translator and guide Muluken Gululat were granted access by a rural Ethiopian tribe to capture their life as never seen before by using unobtrusive cameras. They spent weeks filming and observing the day-to-day life of one family, part of the 20,000-strong Hamar tribe living in the Omo region of Southern Ethiopia. The TV series starts on 11 June and follows them as they fall in love, fall out and come together as a family - and through it all we discover there may be more that unites than divides our two worlds.

For the first part of the evening from 7.30pm Paddy, Josh and Muluken will show extracts from The Tribe and discuss the making of the documentary and the issues it raised and surprises it brought to them.
This is followed by rare television video footage of the 1960s and 70s Ethiopian music scene, which has been obtained exclusively for a forthcoming film Ethiopiques (Superplex and Pokromski Films, directed by Maciek Bochniak). This will be the first exclusive screening of this footage.
Finally Betty and Yared lead live music and dance based on the azmari minstrel tradition. This is sung is azmari bets (clubs) and is designed to be a playful interaction with the audience, accompanied by visual projection of amazing Ethiopian scenes.
