I Love African Markets

Posted: Apr, 7th 2015 Contributor: Bilen Shifferaw,

London has many things that I absolutely love. Particularly the diverse London markets that take place every weekend , whether it’s a farmers markets, designer makers or vintage markets there always seems to be loads to see and experience. In recent years there have been more African Market events springing up. One of my favourites has to be by Open the Gate, a cultural organization that holds a monthly African Market event at Rich Mix in Shoreditch.

The next event is on Saturday 8th June, which will see Open the Gate celebrate their 5th Anniversary.

The reason why I love to attend this event is partly due to the fact that there is such a relaxed and positive vibe in the air. With some really great independent stall holders, music from African bands and even some crowd participation in the way of dance and drumming. I have yet to partake in the drumming session, but I promise to get involved at the next event (God help the people and their ear drums)

I think it’s fair to say that on ever occasion I have attend the African market I have left with a number of items, some for myself and some as gifts for friends and family.

On my last trip I treated myself to an African Print business card holder and some really cool African print earrings and braclets. Plus baby bibs from House of Loulee.

If your after some ethical African inspired fashion, natural beauty and health products, kids clothing, jewellery, shoes, accessories, arts & crafts, homeware and more!, this is the place to be.

It's pretty much 12 hours of fun, with friends and family, facepainting, live music, bargins to be had and its FREE.
