Film Africa Presents: B for Boy

2015, 118 mins

Amaka seems to have it all. A career woman with a loving husband, a fancy apartment in Lagos, an adorable young daughter, and another child on the way. A modern Nigerian woman in every sense. When a sonogram reveals that she’s having a boy, the triumphant reaction of Amaka’s in-laws suggests that more traditional, patriarchal attitudes are still a powerful force in her life, where a husband is bound by duty to continue the family name. After losing the baby, and facing a younger woman who has been primed by her mother-in-law to become her husband’s second wife, Amaka’s life starts to unravel and she is driven to desperate acts of self-preservation.

Uche Nwadili gives a towering performance as a woman caught in the crossfire between old and new world value systems in contemporary Nigeria. Eloquent and delicately told, this powerful drama exposes an ingrained misogyny and at times speaks to broader inequalities facing women across the globe.

Director Chika Anadu will be in attendance to take part in a post-screening Q&A.

Brought to you by Film Africa, the Royal African Society's annual festival celebrating the best African cinema from across the continent. The 2015 edition will take place from 30 October to 8 November.
