Architecture as Sculpture - Rock-hewn Ethiopian Churches by Tarn Philipp

Posted: Jun, 8th 2019 Contributor: Bilen Shifferaw,

Join four recent Travel Scholarship winners present a talk covering findings from their latest research, scholars including Tarn Philipp whose talk examines Architecture as Sculpture - Rock-hewn Churches (Ethiopia).

Each scholar will each give a short, illustrated talk to share their research findings and tell the story of their travels, including the boundaries they came across, borders they crossed, constraints to their research posed by the country they were in and many often a stretch of their personal boundaries. Over the past 15 years, a number of students and recent graduates have crossed many different boundaries to undertake original research on a wide variety of topics in different countries around the world as part of the ADAM Architecture Travel Scholarship.

The talks will be:
The Villa Suburbana and the Garden (Italy) by James Hills
Architecture as Sculpture - Rock-hewn Churches (Ethiopia) by Tarn Philipp
The Human Figure as Architectural Support (Sicily) by Chiara Hall
The Large Urban Developments of Pouillon (France and Algeria) by Jamie Hignett.

ADAM Architecture has always had a keen interest in research, exploring new ideas or developing existing ones, and the annual Travel Scholarship gives a student or recent graduate an opportunity to travel overseas to undertake a significant piece of original research, either pursuing a current research interest or exploring something new. In many cases this research has had a major influence on their career choices.
